The Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for two experienced CNC Field Service Engineers to join a specialist machine tool business.
The roles will involve installing, commissioning, servicing, fault-finding and repairing CNC machine tools at customer sites across the respective regions and throughout the UK.
The company is open to engineers from either an electrical or mechanical CNC background, provided you have strong experience working with CNC machine tools and are confident diagnosing and resolving technical issues.
The successful candidates will play a key role in minimising customer downtime and providing a high standard of technical service and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and commission CNC machine tools and associated equipment.
- Carry out servicing, preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical and control system faults.
- Fault-find on CNC machines, drives, motors, PLCs and associated systems.
- Work with CNC control systems including:
- Heidenhain
- Siemens SINUMERIK
- Fanuc
- Interpret technical documentation, electrical drawings and machine schematics where required.
- Use OEM software and specialist diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve faults.
- Carry out machine testing, calibration and operational checks.
- Backup and restore CNC parameters and machine data where required.
- Provide technical support and guidance to customers and machine operators.
- Complete detailed service reports and maintenance documentation.
- Liaise with technical support, parts teams and customers to resolve issues efficiently.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with relevant site regulations.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven experience servicing, maintaining or repairing CNC machine tools.
- Strong mechanical or electrical engineering background.
- Good understanding of CNC machine operation and control systems.
- Experience with CNC controls, ideally including Heidenhain, Siemens SINUMERIK and/or Fanuc.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently in a customer-facing field service environment.
- Comfortable working at customer sites and dealing directly with customers.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel throughout the UK and stay away overnight when required.
Desirable Experience
- Apprentice-trained engineer or equivalent engineering qualification.
- HNC/HND or NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical or Engineering.
- Experience working for a CNC machine tool OEM, distributor or service organisation.
- Experience with 5-axis CNC machines.
- Experience with machining centres, CNC lathes or grinding machines.
- Knowledge of machine tool accuracy testing and calibration.
- Experience with automation, robotics or peripheral systems.
- PLC knowledge or experience.
- Experience with kinematic setup and axis compensation.
Typical Equipment
The successful engineer will work across a range of CNC machine tools, including:
- Vertical and horizontal machining centres
- Bridge, gantry, bed and travelling-column machines
- CNC lathes – vertical, horizontal and slant-bed
- 5-axis machining centres
- Grinding machines
- Tool changers and associated peripheral systems
